iGaming Ontario Ecosystem Reaches 50 Registered Sites as Operator Competition Intensifies

The number of active registered gaming sites operating under iGaming Ontario's framework has surpassed 50, marking a significant milestone three years after the Ontario regulated online market launched in April 2022.

Ontario’s regulated online gambling market has reached a notable milestone, with the number of active registered gaming sites operating under agreements with iGaming Ontario (iGO) surpassing 50 as of early 2025. The figure, which iGO tracks and publicly discloses in its operator registry, reflects a market that has grown steadily since its April 2022 launch and now hosts some of the world’s most recognized sports betting and casino brands.

What Happened

When iGaming Ontario launched in April 2022, the initial cohort of registered operators was limited. Regulatory approvals through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) required operators to pass suitability reviews, execute operator agreements with iGO, and meet technical certification standards before going live. Early in the market’s development, a handful of major operators dominated the landscape.

By 2025, the operator count has grown significantly. The registry now includes domestic operators, large international sportsbook brands, and specialized casino-only platforms. The breadth of offerings — covering sports betting, online casino gaming, live dealer games, and online poker — has expanded as operators have sought to differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded field.

Why It Matters

A market with more than 50 active registered operators represents a mature, competitive environment. For consumers in Ontario, this means a wider variety of regulated options compared to the grey market that existed before April 2022. For iGaming Ontario, managing a registry of this size requires ongoing compliance monitoring, revenue-sharing reconciliation, and coordination with the AGCO on enforcement matters.

The competitive dynamics within Ontario’s market have intensified. Operators report significant marketing expenditures as each seeks to acquire and retain players in a market where AGCO restrictions on inducement advertising constrain certain promotional tactics. The AGCO’s marketing standards, which restrict direct bonus advertising to the general public, have pushed operators toward brand-building strategies rather than front-of-funnel bonus offers.

Industry observers note that Ontario’s operator count, combined with its wager and revenue figures, places the province among the top five regulated online gambling markets in North America by scale.

Corporate Activity

The milestone has coincided with increased corporate activity in the sector. Several operators have entered into partnerships or minority investment arrangements to strengthen their Ontario market positions. Technology providers, payment processors, and responsible gambling tool vendors have all expanded their Canadian operations in response to the growing number of registered sites.

Some smaller operators that entered the market in 2022 and 2023 have subsequently exited or merged their operations, reflecting the natural consolidation that occurs as markets mature and the cost of customer acquisition rises.

What’s Next

iGO’s annual reporting will provide further insight into market concentration — that is, how revenue and wager volume are distributed across the operator registry. A market with 50+ registered sites but where revenue is concentrated among three to five operators raises different policy questions than one with genuine competition across the full registry.

The AGCO has signalled its intention to continue reviewing marketing standards and responsible gambling requirements as the market grows. Operators seeking to maintain or expand their registrations must demonstrate ongoing compliance with these standards.
